Shihan Interview: Coryl Crane

May 12, 2014

Coryl Crane Shihan was recently interviewed for the Birankai NA Newsletter.

How did I first become interested in Aikido?
By chance, if you believe in chance!  I was studying for a visual arts degree at the University of California, San Diego in 1977, and while walking on campus one evening passed an open door.  I looked in and my attention was immediately caught by a group of people dynamically engaged, moving together, falling over and gracefully getting to their feet.  I had never heard of Aikido at that time but was profoundly intrigued by what I saw.  I signed up and never looked back.

Dojo News for May

May 1, 2014

Another month has flown by and sesshin is upon us. Please note that all classes at the dojo this weekend have been cancelled to accommodate our annual meditation intensive with Genjo Marinello Osho. We have been working all week to make sure that the dojo is as clean as possible. For those of you not attending sesshin, the 10:15 and noon time Aikido classes will be combined and held outdoors, at Seagrove Park, off 15th Street in Del Mar. This is a beautiful location on grass, right above the beach and with a view of the ocean. Please gather there by 10 o'clock Saturday morning. BRING TANTO.

  • Monday, May 26th is Memorial Day and the dojo will be officially closed, but open for practice if arranged in advance with a senior student.
  • This will be the month to begin work constructing more storage space for the dojo. Watch out for further announcements. It will be a time for all hands on deck and should be a fun opportunity to work together to make improvements on our space.

Thanking you as always for your energy in practice and support to keep the bigger picture of our dojo healthy and growing.

Dojo News for April

April 10, 2014
  • We are two weekends away from our SoCal Regional Seminar at Daiwa, April 12 and 13.  Darrell Bluhm Shihan is the guest instructor and classes will also be taught by other shihan.  A sign-up sheet has been put on the bulletin board in the dojo so please let us know if you plan to attend.  Car-pooling will be arranged.
  • May 2 - 4, our annual sesshin with Genjo Marinello Osho will be held at North County Aikikai. Zazen meditation is an invaluable experience for our personal lives as well as being an important complementary practice to our Aikido.  If you have not sat before and/or feel nervous about trying a sesshin for the first time, please come and talk to me or Eddie Fetzer. The dojo will not be available for indoor classes this weekend. However, classes will be conducted outdoors for the children and adults.
  • And lastly, our Birankai Summer Camp, July 18th - 23rd, being held outside of Portland, OR: information is up on the Birankai.org website.  So please keep yourselves updated as the site is refreshed.
